The Waverly Warrior Varsity Soccer team hosted Eaton Rapids in the 2nd CAAC Cup game. After Eaton Rapids scored first, the Warriors battled back with great teamwork and hustle. Senior Anthony Pena scored 3 first half goals to give the Warriors a 3-2 halftime lead. Junior George Alam and Senior Reece Burton assisted on 2 of Pena’s goals. Pena scored his 4th goal of the game early in the 2nd half. After Eaton Rapids scored 2 quick goals, regulation time ended in a tie. Due to CAAC Cup rules, the teams go directly to a shootout. The Warriors ended up going first in the shootout. Senior Spencer Cloud put a great shot in the upper right corner of the net past the greyhound goalkeeper. Senior goalkeeper Francisco Ramirez saved the first shot giving the Warriors a 1-0 advantage. The Warriors 2nd attempt was saved and the Eaton Rapids player shot over the goal. Senior Anthony Pena sent his shot perfectly into the net, however his goal was followed by a greyhound goal. Senior Reece Burton put his shot into the back of the net as well but was followed by another goal giving Waverly a 3-2 advantage. Francisco Ramirez missed his shot attempt wide left leaving only one Eaton Rapids player left; saves it and Waverly wins, or continue with the shootout. The player tried to trick the goalkeeper by shooting straight on but Francisco made the save to secure the victory for the Warriors! Overall, the team played hard and never gave up. Senior Sharbel Dahar, Jaylen Parker, Muhammad Amir, and Muhammad Tahha Zahid all played extremely well and were all instrumental to the team victory. The team has put in a lot of work and will continue to carry this momentum to Monday night, October 10 at Ionia for the last contests of the CAAC Cup. The JV team plays at 5:00 PM and the Varsity at 6:00 PM. The games will be played at Ionia’s football stadium. GO WARRIORS!
